DEVOTIONAL: Reflecting on What Matters

REFLECTING ON WHAT MATTERS

What are you reflecting on today?  Are you reflecting on what matters in your life or are you reflecting on the difficulties that are surrounding you?  I think for most of us we can say this year has been difficult.  The pandemic, uncertainty of the future, loss of loved ones, sickness all around, the changes in our world and the list could just go on and on.  Many times, during this year, I have quoted the scripture in Isaiah 43:2 that says, “When you go through deep waters, I will be with you.  When you go through rivers of difficulty, you will not drown.”  I believe for me; God has shown me to reflect on what truly matters in life rather than the difficulties we have faced.  This year has brought much clarity for my life and for my future, more than ever before.  We can’t be distracted by all the noise in this world that is trying to consume us and take our reflection from the beauty that God has brought, even during these difficult times.

Reflecting and perspective will help you savor the beautiful moments of an ordinary day rather than focusing on all the difficulty or negativity surrounding you.  We have to take a step back and remember that today is a gift….it is its own special day so we need to reflect on what matters today, what God wants for us today, what will bring us joy today and what brings peace to our lives today.  Sometimes we are so distracted by all the difficulty, the uncertainty of the future and all that is going on around us so much that we forget to reflect on what matters and the blessings that God has in TODAY!

First and foremost, our walk with God must be at the forefront of our reflection.  When we walk with Him and we talk with Him and we make Him our main reflection, every difficulty that we face, and the unknown of the future is put into a new perspective because we remember that He is with us always even in the times when we feel He is so far away.  He is there in the deepest of water and He will not let us drown.  Bring your reflection to the good and all you have to be thankful for and STOP reflecting on all the negative.  Shut off the radio, TV and yes, even social media and get in the word of God and let HIM bring your reflection back to what matters.  God will open your heart to a brand-new way of looking at life, if we reflect on HIM and not the things of this world.

In our darkest days, He is there to bring us peace.  In the times we feel that we have nothing good to reflect on, remember that HE matters, and HIS reflection will bring it all back into perspective.  He is a good, good God….Take a deep breath, be in the moment and ask yourself what is important to you in this very moment.  Reflect on all the GOOD God has done in your life. Set aside all of the nonessential so that you can savor and reflect on the essential!

As I have sat this week and reflected on this year, I have concluded many things.  Yes, it has been difficult but reflecting on the things that matter and the blessings all around us brings my reflection to an unwavering God that has seen us through the many storms and deep waters that we have weathered.  It has not been easy, but HE has been faithful!

Many times, the world will occlude our vision of the things that matter most in this life and try to bring us into a pit of hopelessness but when this happens, go to Jesus.  Let HIM help you find the light that is enough to lead you to the next step as you look to His word and let Him help you reflect on what matters TODAY!

Prayer:

Dear Heavenly Father I come to you today and I thank you for all that you have done in my life and all that you continue to do in my life.  I ask you to keep my reflection on you even during the difficult times.  Give me the peace and joy that comes from reflecting on you each and every day.  Lord, take my reflection from my troubles, from this world, from all that takes away from you and put it on your goodness.  In the midst of the struggle, help me to reflect on you because I need your help and hope.  I ask you to find me Lord where I am….empower me and use me for your glory.  I ask you to keep my reflection on you and all the good in my life….In Jesus name I pray….Amen!

Philippians 3:13-14

“Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.”

Romans 12:2

Do not conform to the pattern of this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”
