DEVOTIONAL: ROUND HOLE, SQUARE PEG
Have you been praying for God to change a situation you are in? Well, let me ask you one simple question…Are you doing the same things yet wanting a different result? I remember when my kids were little, they had this toy that consisted of different shapes. They had to find the shape on the box and put that same shaped block in the box. One day my son kept trying to put a round circle in a square hole….over and over he kept trying but over and over it did not work. His frustration was apparent, but I chose to sit back and let him do it on his own. I kept encouraging him to try a different hole for that shape but yes, he is stubborn. Finally, he decided to try a different hole and it worked! He looked at me with such relief and just smiled. It took some time and encouragement, but he decided to do something different and he got a different result. I remembered this scenario and thought about how much it applies to our own lives.
So many of us are doing the same things over and over getting the same result and wondering why God isn’t changing things for us. We get frustrated because our situation is not changing but we are not willing to do it differently or make a different decision. We pray for God to change our situation, but we are not willing to do something different. You know, God gives us free will in our lives to make our own decisions and it is up to us to make the right, prayerful, biblical decision for our lives. I know in my own life I have prayed for God to change a situation, but it just was not happening. Then I decided to go with the tugging of the Holy Spirit and do it His way and immediately I received different results and my heart rested in peace.
Every day, we can choose God’s way, or we can do it our way. We will never stray too far away from God that He will not save us, but God is a just God and there are times He will let us feel the very consequences of our actions and decisions. I just think sometimes we feel that we can just keep doing it our way and God is supposed to fix it for us or line everything up according to what we want or feel. Nope! That is not how God works. We have to line our life, along with the decisions we make in accordance with God’s word and pray for His guidance and will to be done regardless of what WE may want. You better believe if you are making decisions that do not line up with the word of God that it will bring much sorrow, pain and destruction in your life. As a Christian, we cannot live out what we feel and want if it does not line up with His word and expect God to just accept it. If you know it is a sin and continue to do it, trust me, no matter how much you want the situation to work out….it will NOT!
You have to stop doing the same things over and over expecting God to give you a different result. If you haven’t gotten a different result by now, don’t you think God probably isn’t going to give you a different result now? It is time for us to change how we are living life and making our decisions in order to live a life of purpose filled with peace, joy, and contentment in Christ. “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct your path.” Wow, just wow…..we know if we acknowledge Him in ALL OUR WAYS….not just some of them…..He is going to direct us. Seek God, seek out truth in His word, pray without ceasing and surely He will direct you. You can’t lean into your understanding or your best friends understanding, you have to lean into Him, and He will make your path straight so that you will not continue to make those same choices, getting the same results, feeling the same frustration and feeling the same defeat. Stop trying to put a round circle in a square hole. God will sit back patiently waiting and encouraging you to move forward in a new direction in Him….follow his nudging and see if your situation/life doesn’t change. Try God’s way…it works!
Prayer:
Dear Heavenly Father I come to you today and I ask you to help me stop doing the same things over and over expecting a different result. I ask you to give me the strength and wisdom to make the right decision regarding my life and this situation. Help me to trust your way is better than my way. Give me the patience to handle all the decisions I have to make and fill me with strength so that I may follow your lead and not my own. Help me to take the path that you are showing me even if that path seems long. Thank you Lord for loving me enough to never leave me nor forsake me even when I do things my way. In Jesus name I pray…..Amen!
